About the Role
We are seeking a motivated, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic person to fill the position of Recreation Operator as an integral part of our dynamic public works team with the vision to advance through successive certifications for facility (arena) operations. Reporting to the Working Foreman or Chief Facility Operator depending on work assignment, you are part of a team tasked with various park maintenance, pool related, and janitorial tasks in the summer and in the winter as a member of our arena team.
In summer, your typical duties include operating mechanized equipment such as lawn mowers and tractors, associated implements, light trucks, and hand tools and ensuring the professional maintenance and cleanliness of public areas, grounds, gardens, washrooms, and facilities. In winter, you will operate the Zamboni, small equipment designed for ice maintenance, perform regulated refrigeration plant safety checks, facility maintenance and other duties as assigned.
All duties must be performed to departmental procedures, safety policies, municipal regulations, Technical Safety BC, and Work Safe regulations. The successful applicant must provide upon hire the minimum certifications below. This is a position within the CUPE 2309 bargaining unit and is paid at a rate of $34.78.
Qualifications
Your minimum qualifications and skills must include:
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent;
- Possession of a valid British Columbia class 5 Driver’s License;
- Technical Safety BC’s Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certification;
- Level 1 First Aid certification;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and deal courteously, tactfully, and diplomatically with supervisors, coworkers, and the public;
- Physical ability to carry out assigned duties in all types of weather;
- Ability to maintain facility maintenance records.
Additional preferred qualifications and experience:
- Operation of landscaping and ice resurfacing equipment;
- Familiarity with refrigeration systems, arena facility operation, and maintenance;
- Experience with irrigation systems and maintenance;
- Possession of a pesticide applicators license;
- Certification as a pool operator, boiler operator, and playground inspector;
- Horticulture experience;
- WHMIS and TDG certification; and,
- Familiarity with turf management techniques.
