An Evacuation Alert is a warning about a potential threat to life and/or property. It is intended to give you time to be ready for a possible evacuation order. Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible before an evacuation; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

What you should do when an Evacuation Alert is in effect:

  • Locate your grab-and-go bags for you and your family. Include essentials like government-issued ID, medications, important documents, and care items for dependents. Make sure you have enough clothing and supplies for 72 hours. Visit www.preparedbc.ca for details.
  • Contact family members, advise them of the situation and determine a meeting location outside of the evacuation area where you can safely reconnect should the area be evacuated.
  • Help your local Emergency Support Services (ESS) team by self-registering now at ess.gov.bc.ca.
  • Prepare to take pets with you and move livestock to a safe area (if possible).
  • Arrange transportation for all household members, including assistance for children, seniors, or those with disabilities.
  • Park vehicles away from waterways.
  • Raise electrical appliances off the ground.
  • Anchor fuel supplies.
  • Accommodation in the area may be limited. Make plans to stay with family or friends, if possible.
  • If you are aware of vulnerable people who may need support, if there is an Evacuation Order, or if you need support moving livestock, contact the Emergency Operation Centre at 250-344-7473

Safety reminders:

  • Exercise caution around riverbanks as fast-moving water can cause erosion and destabilization.
  • Do not attempt to cross rivers or flowing streams
  • Do not drive or walk across flooded roads. 6 inches of rushing water can knock an adult off their feet; 2 feet of water can carry away most vehicles, including trucks and SUVs
  • Keep pets away from fast-moving water.
