In March 2026, Council adopted Bylaw No. 1510, 2026 Town of Golden Responsible Pet Ownership and Animal Control. The bylaw establishes new regulations for backyard hen and duck keeping, including limits on flock size and requirements for coops, enclosures, and animal care.
Backyard hen/duck regulations help us make sure pets, their owners and neighbours are safe and can enjoy Golden. There are several important guidelines that you must follow to keep backyard chicken hens/ducks and to make sure that it isn’t a nuisance for your neighbours. This includes:
- Keeping no more than six (6) backyard hens/ducks on a property.
- Ensure that your hens/ducks can’t escape their enclosure or your yard.
- Maintaining your backyard enclosure and coop. The coop and enclosure must be in good repair, in sanitary condition, and free from vermin, noxious smells and chicken manure.
