Cross-Connection Control Program

Protecting the safety of drinking water is a public health priority. In British Columbia, the Ministry of Health and Interior Health Authority are responsible for ensuring that drinking water systems meet safety standards.

As a condition of our Permit to Operate, Interior Health requires that all water suppliers develop and maintain a Cross Connection Control (CCC) Program. The Town of Golden has implemented its CCC program in compliance with these requirements and under the authority of Bylaw No. 1282, 2011.

What Is a Cross Connection?

A cross connection occurs when a private water source (such as an irrigation system, industrial equipment, or heating system) is directly or indirectly connected to the municipal water supply. If backflow occurs, these systems can introduce contaminants into our drinking water.

What Is Required?

Under the bylaw, all Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) water users must install an approved backflow prevention device.

If you own or operate an ICI property:

  • Ensure you have the appropriate backflow prevention device installed at your water connection in accordance with Bylaw No. 1282, 2011.
  • Schedule annual testing with a certified tester and submit test reports to the Town of Golden within 30 days.
  • Ensure that the device is kept in good working condition and protected from damage.

Failure to comply with testing and maintenance requirements may result in water service being shut off until the issue is resolved.
