Town of Golden and Golden Food Bank Society sign five-year lease agreement

The Town of Golden and the Golden Food Bank Society have signed a five-year land and building lease agreement, allowing the Food Bank to establish a new centre of operations in the Golden community.

“This is a mutually beneficial agreement for all involved,” said Mayor Ron Oszust. “Both the Town and the Golden Food Bank Society will be able to find cost savings and our Food Bank will be able to improve and expand on their current operations.”

The new Food Bank will be located at 1409 9th St S, across from the Golden Municipal Swimming Pool. The society currently pays approximately $13 thousand each year in basic rent, making them the only food bank in the Columbia Basin that pays market price for rent and utilities, in addition to staff wages and other operational expenses, without the support of a partner agency. Through the nominal rent agreement of one dollar a year, Council will eliminate its annual $6 thousand contribution to the society, alleviating taxpayers of $30 thousand over the term of the proposed 5-year agreement, and in perpetuity assuming continuous renewals under current conditions.

“We are very grateful to Town staff and Council for their support and work on this project,” said Board Chair, Alycia Weir, with the Golden Food Bank Society. “We are looking forward to the move and the opportunities the new space brings.”

In 2020, the Golden Food Bank distributed over one thousand hampers, an increase of 30 per cent over 2019. The Food Bank provides food solutions to those in our community that need it, in addition to providing access to basic hygiene and household items. The Food Bank has developed strong community partnerships, receiving food from donations as well as a food recovery program that helps divert food waste from landfills.

The new location will provide the Food Bank with a more accessible building, additional space to grow larger gardens, opportunities for community engagement, and the ability to expand programming beyond emergency food into community and capacity building.
